Grammar Schools in London

London has 14 state grammar schools — selective secondary schools that admit pupils based on academic ability, assessed through the 11+ examination. They are concentrated in outer London boroughs, particularly Barnet, Bexley, Bromley, Kingston, Sutton and Redbridge.

Unlike most state schools, grammar schools are not available to all pupils — entry requires passing a competitive entrance exam. There are no grammar schools in inner London boroughs.

The London 11+ — How Entry Works

01
Year 5 — Register in June/July
Most London grammar schools require registration in the summer term of Year 5 (when your child is 9–10). Missing this deadline means missing that year's entry cycle. Check each school's admissions page directly — deadlines vary.
02
September/October Year 6 — Sit the 11+
Tests are typically held in September or October of Year 6. Most London grammar schools use GL Assessment papers testing Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, Reading and Maths. Some schools use the CEM test or bespoke papers.
03
October/November — Results
Schools usually inform families whether their child has achieved the required standard (passed) within a few weeks of the test. Passing the 11+ qualifies your child to apply — it does not guarantee a place.
04
October 31 — Secondary school application deadline
Submit your secondary school application through your local council's online portal by 31 October. You can list up to six schools in preference order. Include the grammar school as your first choice if it is your preference.
05
1 March — National Offer Day
Places are offered on 1 March (or the next working day). If your child passed the 11+ but does not receive an offer, you can join the waiting list and appeal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many grammar schools are in London?
London has a relatively small number of state grammar schools compared to counties like Kent or Buckinghamshire. Most are concentrated in outer London boroughs — particularly Barnet, Bexley, Bromley, Kingston upon Thames, Sutton and Redbridge. There are no grammar schools in inner London boroughs such as Islington, Hackney, Tower Hamlets or Camden.
How do you get into a grammar school in London?
Entry to London grammar schools is through the 11+ examination, typically taken in Year 6 (age 10-11). Each school sets its own exam — some use the GL Assessment, others use the CEM test or their own bespoke papers. Most grammar schools test in Reading, Maths, and Verbal or Non-Verbal Reasoning. Registration deadlines are usually in June or July of Year 5, with tests in September or October. Passing the 11+ does not guarantee a place — schools then apply their oversubscription criteria (usually distance, siblings, or looked-after children).
Are London grammar schools better than state comprehensives?
Grammar schools consistently produce high raw attainment scores — but this largely reflects the selective intake. Because pupils are chosen for high academic ability, comparisons with non-selective schools on attainment are not fair. On progress measures (how much pupils improve from their starting point), some grammar schools are outperformed by non-selective Outstanding schools. The best comprehensive secondaries in London often achieve results comparable to grammar schools.
Can you get into a London grammar school without tutoring?
It is possible but increasingly difficult at the most competitive schools. At schools like Queen Elizabeth's Boys' or Henrietta Barnett, the vast majority of successful applicants have received significant preparation. Less competitive grammar schools (those that do not receive a very high number of applications relative to places) are more accessible without intensive tutoring. Free preparation resources are available through some local authorities.
Are there grammar schools in inner London?
There are no state grammar schools in inner London boroughs. The City of London area has City of London School and City of London School for Girls, but these are independent fee-paying schools, not state grammar schools. Some outer London boroughs — particularly in the south and south-east — do have grammar schools.
